Hello my name is Thomas Wolf Tompkins owner of Wolf-Tech. I would like to take some time to say a few things about myself and how I got into fixing computers on my own. My first computer I ever owned was a TRS-80 in 1981. Yes the good old trashy 80. Well it at least had dos on it and I learned from there. I also owned many game systems and even a commodore 64. The first real x86 computers came out in 1991 with the 8086 which was only a 8 MHz Cpu and 256k of ram. Dos 1.0 and windows 1.0.  I learned that and then got a 286 16 MHz Cpu with 512k ram and 1MB ram main board. Now up to dos 2.0 and windows 2.0. When the 386 came out it really started to take shape that the computer was going to be a tool for everyone. Dos. 3.1 and windows 3.11 made that come alive. In 1995 we all got a taste of windows 95. The first release was a big mess Version A. Had nothing but problems with PNP and hardly anything worked. With the Version B that was released about a year later things worked good. I ran Windows 95 B for a long time was very happy with it and it worked. You could also tweak it to run very stable and till this day I still miss it.

When Windows 98 came out I did not like it one bit. For the reason this is the one OS that Microsoft release that sunk there company into a ruin that still exists today. They integrated Internet explorer into the OS making it part of the OS. So if a virus infected internet explorer it infected the whole OS along with it. It was a poor decision on there part. With 98 SE they still had the integration. We all had to run it because software now was demanding it. The virus writers were having a ball because of there stupid decision.

In the year 1999 I went to school to learn networking and administration in Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000. I loved this OS because it worked like 95b had same security and worked Much better. My favorite was windows 2000 server I ran that OS since it came out till around 2002. Now to get some things right Windows 2000 was Version 5.0 of windows NT. Windows XP was version 5.1 of NT. Windows Vista was version 6.0 of NT and Windows 7 is version 6.1 of NT. Now Windows 8 that's coming next year in 2012 is Version 6.2.

On the Server Side of things. There was Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2003 Server and Windows 2003 server x64, then Windows 2008 server and now we are at windows 2011 Server. Based on NT numbers that NT 5.0 NT 5.1 and 5.2 x64 then 6.0 and 6.1.

Now there was one OS Microsoft released that was only out for 3 months before it was pulled from the market. Yet till this day I still run it and Most Administrators love this OS. The OS in question is Windows XP 64 Bit. The reason is it's based of the Windows 2003 Server x64 OS. So its very stable. It can handle 128 GB of ram and talk about memory management it's still the best till this day. Windows 7 today with say 16 gigs of ram on boot consumes about 1/4 of it just to boot. On Windows XP64 it only uses 200 megs of memory in any configuration to boot. Also 32 bit apps in Windows 7 can only address up to 2GB of ram when in XP 64 it can address up to 8 GB of ram. I use Windows XP 64 SP2 here at work for the one reason the OS is immune to 32 bit virus's and root kits. Which makes it a great service OS.

Now on to my work related jobs in the industry. I started work in 1995 for www.victoriacounty.com I even made that web site. I also started as a Administrator for The Victoria Cap Site's. I worked volunteer up there because there was nothing better to do. I stayed there for 3 years doing various admin work. In 1998 I went to McKenzie college to get a degree in System Administration. I passed all my courses there and got it done in 1999. I wrote my A+ and MCP after the course. In the summer of 1999 in August. I came down to Halifax looking for work. I never forget the trip. I came down on a Sunday and Pitched a tent at the KOA campgrounds. Once I got settled in I decided to go out and see a movie for something to do. I decided to see the Blair Witch Project. Well that was a very bad idea since after watching the movie I was sleeping in a tent. Also to make it worst it started to rain and poured all Night. The branches of trees were breaking and that movie made it much worse. To make it short I got no Sleep all night.

On Monday Morning I got up got all my resumes ready and went looking for work. I went to 15 computer shops that morning and found no job. So after a busy morning I decided not to worry about it and just enjoy myself while I hear. I went to the malls all the places around town then stopped in Pen horn Mall for a coffee. In the line a person behind me ask me where did I work. I had a Webcom shirt on me. I said no job for me came down from CB looking and gave up. He said to me I bet ya I could get a job for ya. I said Ya right.  Well He wanted me to drive him somewhere if I got a job. I said deal. He took me to a place across the street and it was called Gateway Computer Services. In 1 hour I had a job paying 10 bucks an hour. I couldn't believe it. So I drove him to where he wanted to go and Started my move to Halifax.

I worked there for 5 months till the boss laid me off for xmas. It really sucked because I had moved down settle in had rent to pay bills and everything. I had to go on welfare because there was no work around at that time of year. In June of 2000 I applied at TNE electronics for A service Tech job. I got it and started to work the Halifax store. I worked there for 2 years which was great was able to get E.I. after they shutdown and I was set to get more certifications and look for a better job.

On E.I., I got my network + certification and my Toshiba Repair for laptops. Bored after 6 months on E.I. I went looking for work again. But nothing was around. So I went to this place in Newsbreak Cafe called JPJ computers. I met Mike there and he was just one man. I told him this let me work for ya for free for a month. If you don't see a increase in your business I'll leave. I didn't really have to worry since I had E.I. . After one month He hired me and I became his Service manager. I worked for mike for the first year redid his website and increased his Business in service 192% in the first year and 140% in sales. He bought me steak dinner. I worked with him as we expanded. From 2002 to 2005 he was my best boss I ever had. In 2005 though things went south when he decided to move across the street out of Newsbreak Cafe. We lost our foot traffic and the business took a nose dive and My job was gone. I collected E.I. for 6 months but then had to take a security officer job just to pay the bills. Then JPJ bought the old Cellar computers store on Wyse road. He let me manage it and run it. With my own store I decided to show him what I could do. I made that store run awesome in a year. I had around 40k in sales a month and 30k in service. I was working so hard had to hire more help. After a year and a half mike decided to shutdown he's store in Burnside and move to my store on Wyse road. I had a bad feeling about this since I knew Mike was not that great with customer service. Well after he moved in He laid me off for the summer.

After just 3 months he ruined all my work on building that store and making good customer relations. He biggest mistake was that when I was there I did not charge to look at computers to see there problems. The first customer that walked in the door once I was gone was Forbes Chevy. Mike asked for 75.00 just to look at it he left and never came back. Forbes was giving my store about 20k in service a month with all the other dealers working with me.

Well after that I had to go Back home to CB and rethink things.

I spent the whole winter of 2007 in CB and decided to give my own Business a try. But this time do it right. A actual store and Real location. But the only Location I wanted was the Old Newsbreak Cafe where it all started. I moved back to Halifax in the spring of 2008 and then asked Mike Hammond if I could rent that space where the old JPJ computers was inside newsbreak cafe. At first he said no. So I worked on getting his family behind me and then he finally caved on the space but the girls of the shop was using that space for storage. So for 3 weeks I sent a rose to each of them till they finally let me rent that place. I started on June 2008 inside newsbreak and had the office up and running. The first 6 months was brutal on business. The next year started a little better till April hit. Andrew Krystal came in for some service and I fixed him up. He was so pleased with the work I did he put me on the radio at the end of the month. He called me Computer Tom really did not ask for that but the name took like clue. Most people at my office just call me the Computer wolf. Some call me the wolf man.

Since April 2008 I have been doing ok for 2 years and never had any issues. Then what I call it was the year of hell. 2011 when Andrew Krystal left for bigger things in Ontario my business took a dive. The year saw a 33% decline in business which was huge for me since I was just being able to get by in 2010. So at the start of 2012 I have some new ways I'm going to do business. The 48 hour turn around time is a big change. Also 1 flat rate for everything in that 48 hours. That includes backups repairs to OS's virus removal and so on. I still offer the 7 day warranty after pickup and still don't ask for any money unless I fix the problems.

Well thank you for reading my story hope to see you in my office someday.

Thank You
